What are signs of problems in your basement?
Basement Fact: Around 38% of basements with moisture problems develop mold and fungus growth
Condensation or the collection of water on surfaces is one of the several telling signs of basement problems and is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Mold begins to grow in 24 to 48 hours and that growth is not just contained in your basement or crawlspace due to the “stack effect.” Mold spores rises with warm air infiltrating your home and existing the attic. Not only will you smell the odor of mold and mildew, but your health will be of concern as mold can cause symptoms, such as a runny nose, itchy-watery eyes, mild allergic reactions, a scratchy throat, fatigue and breathing discomfort. In some cases, mold can be toxic! Controlling the air quality and eliminating water problems is critical to preventing condensation and therefore crucial to preventing the creation of mold and mildew.
Ways to prevent mold growth:
- Montior humidity levels in basement (45% or above is high)
- Use a dehumidifer to keep humidity levels in check
- Reduce congestion in basement by decluttering to allow for free air flow and increased ventilation
- Ensure proper grading to direct groundwater away from the house
Other signs of wet basement problems:
- Leaks around basement windows

- Wet floors
- Cracked basement walls
